Searching for keyless entry installation near you usually starts with one of three moments: you are tired of hiding a key under something by the front step, you have a rental or a small business where keys keep walking off, or a lock you bought yourself is sitting in its box because the door will not cooperate. All three are ordinary work for a locksmith, and all three go better when the hardware decision is made before anything is unscrewed.

Keypad deadbolt or connected smart lock?
These get sold as one category and they are not. The difference matters more than the brand on the box.
A keypad deadbolt
Standalone. Batteries, a keypad, a set of codes stored inside the lock. No hub, no account, no network. You punch the code and the bolt moves. What it buys you: no key to lose, no key to copy, and codes you can change yourself when the dog walker stops walking the dog. What it does not buy you: any way to know whether anyone came in, and no way to change a code without standing at the door.
For most single-family homes, this is the right answer and it is the one people are surprised to hear. It has the fewest moving parts, the fewest ways to fail, and it does not stop working because a company retired an app.
A connected smart lock
Everything above, plus a radio. Now you can add and remove codes remotely, see an access log, and hand someone entry without meeting them. That is worth real money to a landlord, a property manager, a small office, or anyone who does not live where the door is. It also introduces a chain of things that can be broken independently: the lock, its battery, the radio link, whatever bridge or hub carries that link, your home internet, and the account that owns all of it.
The honest way to decide: if you cannot name a specific thing you want to do remotely, you are buying a longer failure chain for no return. If you can — a code that expires Sunday, a cleaner who should only get in Tuesday mornings — the connected lock earns its place.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and low-power mesh, in plain English
Bluetooth is short range and low power. Your phone talks to the lock when you are standing near it. Battery life is good because the radio is asleep almost all the time. The limitation is exactly what it sounds like: no phone nearby, no control. Remote features on a Bluetooth lock are borrowed — they only work if something else in the house is relaying for it.
Wi-Fi puts the lock straight onto your router. Nothing else to buy, control from anywhere. The cost is power. A Wi-Fi radio that has to stay reachable is the single hungriest thing in that lock, and it is why Wi-Fi models chew through batteries faster than anything else on the door.
Low-power mesh radios sit between the two. Tiny power draw, long battery life, but they do not speak to your router directly — they need a hub, and the hub is one more box that has to be powered and online. Where mesh shines is a property with several openings, because each device relays for the others and coverage improves as you add locks rather than degrading.
Why Wi-Fi struggles at the front door
A front door is close to the worst place in a building to put a Wi-Fi device. Signal is absorbed by mass, and a front entry commonly sits behind block, brick veneer, stucco over lath, a metal door skin, or a metal frame — sometimes several at once. Meanwhile the router is usually in an interior room or on the far side of the house, because that is where the cable comes in.
The result is a lock that shows connected on the app while sitting on the edge of usable signal. It works, it works, and then it does not — and the failures cluster on exactly the days when the weather changed or someone moved a piece of furniture. Before you commit to a Wi-Fi lock we check what signal is actually at the door, not what the router claims to cover. If it is marginal, a mesh lock with a hub placed sensibly, or a plain keypad deadbolt, will serve you far better than a Wi-Fi lock that needs a coin flip to open.
Batteries: why "the batteries were fine" is usually wrong
This is the most misdiagnosed fault in keyless entry, and the physics are worth understanding because it will save you a service call.
A battery has two different voltages. There is resting voltage, which is what a meter reads and what the lock reports when it is idle, and there is voltage under load, which is what is left when the motor is actually driving the bolt. As a cell ages its internal resistance climbs. Resting voltage barely moves — it still reads near full — but the moment the motor draws current the voltage collapses, the motor stalls partway, and the lock reports a jam or simply does nothing.
That is why a lock nobody has visited for three weeks fails on the day someone arrives. Nothing changed except that the batteries had time to sit and the low-battery chirp went off in an empty building, sounded for its programmed interval, and stopped. Nobody heard it. The app, if there is one, may still show a percentage that was calculated from resting voltage.
What follows from that:
- Replace batteries on a calendar, not on a warning. For a door in regular use, a scheduled change beats waiting for a chirp.
- Change the full set at once, not one cell. A fresh cell in series with a tired one is limited by the tired one.
- Cold and heat both shorten the useful life, and a west-facing entry on the coast is a hot door.
- Know where the external power contact is before you need it. Many locks have one — a nine-volt terminal or USB point on the outside — that gives you enough current to open the door once with dead cells inside.
The door is the variable, not the lock
If we get called out to one thing more than any other on keyless entry, it is a lock that "stopped working" on a door that shifted. A key gives you leverage and a wrist behind it; you feel the bolt drag and you push harder without noticing. A small electric motor has no such reserve. It has exactly the torque it has, and when the bolt starts rubbing the strike, that motor is the first thing in the system to give up.
Doors move. Timber takes on moisture in a humid summer and gives it back in a dry spell. Hinges settle. A frame gets nudged by a delivery. On the coast the swings are bigger and faster because the humidity is relentless. None of that is a fault in the lock and no amount of resetting the app will fix it.
The test anyone can do in ten seconds
Open the door wide, so the bolt has nothing but air in front of it, and throw the bolt by hand with the thumbturn. Then close the door and throw it again.
- Smooth open, stiff closed — the lock is fine. The bolt is fighting the strike. That is alignment, and it is fixed at the frame: the strike plate, the strike box behind it, the hinges, or the door's position in the opening.
- Stiff both ways — the problem is in the lock body or the cylinder, and the lock itself needs attention.
- Smooth both ways but the motor still struggles — now look at batteries, and at whether the tailpiece or spindle is properly engaged.
We run that test on every keyless installation before we consider the job finished, and we correct the strike so the bolt drops through the centre of the hole with clearance around it. A bolt that just barely clears today has no margin left for next season.
Retrofit or full replacement
Some keyless hardware is designed to keep your existing exterior cylinder and replace only the inside — you keep the keys you have and gain a motor and a keypad. Other models replace the entire deadbolt.
Three measurements decide which of those is possible on your door, and they are worth knowing before you buy anything:
- Backset — the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the bore. There are two common sizes and hardware is not always supplied to handle both.
- Bore diameter — the size of the round hole through the door face, plus the smaller cross-bore in the edge for the latch.
- Door thickness — standard interior and exterior thicknesses differ, and doors with heavy weatherproofing or a storm layer can sit outside the range a given lock ships to cover.
Where a door was previously fitted with an unusual lock, the existing holes may not line up with anything modern. That is repairable, but it is prep work and it belongs in the conversation before the visit rather than as a surprise during it. Sending a photo of the door edge and the existing hardware usually settles the question over the phone.
Mechanical override, and where the physical key lives
Nearly every keypad deadbolt worth fitting keeps a keyed cylinder. That cylinder is your override for dead batteries, a soaked keypad, or a lock that has lost its programming. It is also, quietly, the weakest link in the whole assembly if you ignore it — a very good electronic lock with a poor cylinder is a poor lock.
When we install, we key that cylinder to a key you already carry wherever the hardware allows, so you are not adding another key to the ring. Then we have the conversation nobody enjoys: where does that key live? Not under the mat, not in a fake rock, not on a rail beside the door. Somewhere off the property, or with a person, or in a properly mounted box you control.
A handful of fully electronic models have no cylinder at all and rely entirely on an external power contact. That is a legitimate design, but it changes your fallback plan, and it is a decision to make with open eyes rather than discover on a night when the batteries are flat.
Power cuts, dropped internet, and dead apps
Battery-powered keyless locks do not care about grid power. The codes live in the lock, and with the internet down, every code you have already programmed still opens the door. What you lose is the remote half — adding a code from your phone while you are elsewhere, checking the log, getting a notification.
That is worth planning around rather than worrying about. Anyone who genuinely needs to get in should hold a code that already works, not one you intend to send them later. And where a lock's usefulness depends entirely on a manufacturer's servers staying online, it is fair to ask what the lock still does if that company changes direction. A keypad deadbolt with local codes answers that question by design.
Taking over a property where someone else owns the app
This one comes up constantly at closings and at management handovers, and it catches people out. A connected lock has an owner account, and the owner account is not transferred by the deed. The previous owner or the previous manager may still be able to add codes, remove yours, and see when the door opens — not through malice, usually through nobody having thought about it.
Getting clear of that means a factory reset of the lock followed by re-enrolment under your own account, and on some hardware it also means the previous account holder actively releasing the device on their side. Where that person is unreachable or uncooperative, replacing the lock is sometimes the cleaner answer and we will say so rather than sell you a week of support tickets.
Either way, the same rule applies to a keyless lock that applies to a keyed one when you take possession of a property: assume every credential that existed before you is still out there, and start fresh. On the mechanical side that means a rekey; on the electronic side it means a reset and a new account.
Salt air, and what it does to hardware here
Anyone living near the water in Okaloosa County already knows what salt does to metal. On door hardware it shows up in a specific order: the finish clouds first, then pits, then the fasteners and the springs behind the finish start to go, and the keypad's membrane or seal degrades where it is exposed. A lock rated for a suburban front door three states inland will not have a comfortable life on an exposed entry near the Sound or the Gulf.
What actually helps is unglamorous. Choose hardware finished for coastal exposure rather than the cheapest finish in the range. Favour a door with genuine shelter over it. Keep the exterior escutcheon sealed where it meets the door face so wind-driven rain does not sit inside the housing. Rinse hardware on a fully exposed entry the way you would rinse anything else out there. And when a finish does start to fail, treat it as an early warning about the fasteners underneath rather than a cosmetic issue.
Keyless entry for a small business
The moment more than a handful of people need to get in, the maths of keys stops working. Somebody leaves, and either you rekey the building or you accept that a key is out there. Keyless removes that: you delete a code or a credential and the problem is closed the same afternoon.
At the simplest level, a commercial-grade keypad lock on a back door with a code per person is a genuine improvement over a shared key. Beyond that you are into access control proper — electric strikes, magnetic locks, readers and credentials, request-to-exit devices — and the rules change, because life safety enters the picture. Egress is not negotiable: whatever the entry side does, people inside must be able to get out without a code, a card or special knowledge. That single principle overrides every convenience feature, and it is the first thing we look at on a commercial opening.
What an installation visit involves
- Look at the door before the box is opened. Backset, bore, thickness, frame condition, hinge wear, how the door sits in the opening, and what signal is available at that spot if a connected lock is on the table.
- Correct the opening first. Hinges tightened, strike and strike box aligned, bolt throwing full depth into a hole with clearance. This is the step that gets skipped and it is the step that determines whether the lock is still working in two years.
- Fit and set up. Hardware mounted square, motor and tailpiece engaged properly, codes programmed, keyed override cylinder keyed to your existing key where the hardware allows.
- Hand over properly. Account created in your name, master and user codes documented for you, batteries dated, and the open-door and closed-door bolt test demonstrated so you can diagnose the common fault yourself.
What drives the cost
We will not quote a number on a page for a door we have not seen, because the honest answer depends on four things: the hardware tier you choose, whether the door needs prep such as a new bore, a backset correction or a thickness adjustment, whether the frame and strike need real correction to let the bolt run free, and how many openings are being done in the same visit. A single opening on a door that is already square and true is a straightforward job. The same lock on a door that has dropped in its frame is a different one, and pretending otherwise on a website helps nobody.
Common questions
Can you install a lock I already bought?
Yes, and it is a normal request. Send a photo of the model and one of your door edge first — if it will not physically fit, it is better to know before the visit than during it.
Will a keyless lock make my door more secure?
Only if the deadbolt grade and the strike anchoring improve at the same time. A keypad on a short bolt in a strike plate held by two short screws into trim is a convenience upgrade with no security gain. Long screws reaching the framing behind the jamb, and a bolt that throws its full length, are where the actual resistance comes from.
Can I keep one key for the house and use codes for guests?
That is a common and sensible setup: your key opens the override cylinder, everyone else gets a code that can be deleted. Where there are several exterior doors we can key those cylinders alike so one key still covers the whole property.
How many codes should a household actually have?
One per person or purpose, and none shared. The value of keyless is being able to remove one person's access without disturbing anyone else's, and a single shared code that everyone knows throws that away.
